In NYC, George Fuller was severely injured when he was thrown from the ice cart on which he was riding and then run over by it; he received medical aid in the NY Hospital. In New York, Political conventions by the Democratic party, plagued by divisions between the Hunker and Radical factions, and the Whig party took place in Syracuse last week; the enlargement of the Erie Canal was a major issue. In the U.S., Governor Johnston of Pennsylvania issued a proclamation offering a $1000 reward for the arrest of guilty parties involved in a "riot" to resist the capture of two fugitive slaves in Lancaster County, PA; Mr. Gorsuch of Baltimore, the slaveowner, was killed and others injured on September 9th, and over two dozen were arrested in conjunction with the riot. In Europe, Presidential elections, with Prince de Joinville running against Louis Napoleon, were approaching in France. The Queen of England visited "the Exhibition" in Scotland. Elsewhere, an editorial discussed, in laudatory terms, the recent attempt by Lopez to create a revolt in Cuba against the Spanish government. Meanwhile, at a wedding in Hungary, Austrian gendarmes (police) used scissors to shear both hair and red, white, and green ribbons from a bride's head at the altar, leading to a riot that killed four peasants and three police.
